Backfill sand sources

The backfill sand is crucial to the long-term success of the system. Every sand source must be verified by the installer to meet the specifications.

Inspection checklist

This checklist helps local health departments confirm a T&J Panel system was installed correctly. It is also in the Installation Manual.

  • Is the depth of the panels within guidelines?
  • Are drain lines level, or within less than 1/4 inch fall per 10 ft?
  • Have seals been properly constructed?
  • Was the proper sand used in the trench backfill? Is it clean (free of debris, large organics, leaves)? Has it been screened to a medium grade, free of large rocks? Is it naturally occurring, from a river, creek or sand pit, not manufactured?
  • In soils where clay is present, were the sidewalls raked and limed?
  • Were panels installed horizontally or vertically, according to the permit?
  • For pumped systems: have pump size, head pressure and dose cycle been properly sized and set?
  • Record field data on the operations permit.
